ED CONLEY: “I will be exploring The Logic of Ambiguity or Creativity in this talk. The modern world since Newton and Descartes has been operating under one logic, the classical logic of identity where A is A and B is B and A cannot be B in the same situation. This is the logic of either/or, yes or No. And this logic has created the modern world that runs like a machine. Because of our success, we have suppressed our original logic, the Logic of Life for the Logic of the Machine, because we love our machines. We are victims of our success. Now we must realize the limitations of our logic. Logic is a tool. Our logic is not reality, but we have come to believe it is. Our logic, the logic of science is a wonderful logic, but every artist knows it has limitations.
Art uses the Logic of Ambiguity or Creativity where A is A and B is B and in art A is B and B is A.
Art and life naturally use the logic of Unity, not the separation of parts. In Art, there are no parts. In Art and life, there is no fragmentation. In art and life, there is no either/or choice. With the logic of Ambiguity or creativity—first ambiguity, then creativity—you are in alignment with life and not a machine.
Both the logic of the Machine and the logic of Life are valid logics and that are available according to the needs of the situation. If you are fixing a machine, use the Logic of Identity or the Machine. If you are dealing with life, use the Logic of Live. When working with the machine you see the error first; when working with your life, you see the whole of life first.
With machine logic, you work towards a creative solution. Aha…I found the bad part. Using the logic of Life, you begin with the whole, then follow with the parts that are always part of the whole.
Our Logic of the Machine has been so successful, that it is the dominant logic now. It is our common sense. This is why it is impossible to switch to a different logic. You can see right there how our thinking works. I said it’s impossible to break from our omnipresent logic of the machine.
Switch to the logic of ambiguity, right now. The impossible is possible….It is our logic that creates the idea of the impossible. Logic says that A is A. The impossible is impossible and it cannot be possible.
You need a new logic, and then everything is possible, not out there in the world, but as You.
What is your teaching Emorer Wu asked Bodhidharma, the Zen sage who brought Zen to China.
Vast emptiness where not a thing is holy, he said.
You need a new logic to grasp the truth of this.”
