STARTING OUT, EVERY MOMENT.

{ time&timeless }
This superb illustration – let’s call it ‘Starting Out‘ – by María Jesús Contreras in this morning’s New York Times, struck me boldly in two ways: it gave me pause with the memory of my being a seven-year-old delicately pushed along by Dad on my new bike. That moment astride the wheels of time was indeed very thrilling, as was the moment I woke up on the couch later, after trembling, errantly tipping, then valiantly falling off the bike and having (as I learned later) a head-on collision with a cement street curb! Ah, boyhood daze!
The other aspect the image precipitated, and which is here now as I write this, is that this image pictures the subtle non-experiencing of aware living now, as it happens, timelessly. It’s a balancing-in-change that one never quite gets used to, it seems. This moment is alertly met with a profound unknowing; a resting in mixed curiousity, gratitude, and wonder that in fact, one actually, truly, is. All this is totally, absolutely indescribable, of course, but let’s stumble on with a few more apparently time-making, dualizing words about words, just for the joy of exploring our shared self-nature 😉
On further reflection, there’s a clarity that one doesn’t have a clue about anything; that nothing is known about this beingness – just that one, somehow, magically, IS. All the rest – the sights, smells, sighs, and sensations of the body are blended with the thoughts, feelings, urges, and pulsations of a mystery that seems as real as the soup my wife Alla is making in the kitchen, apparently.
In fine, aware living is a constant unknowing, a teetering into this vast, empty nowness, this mystery that words like beauty, peace, love, and joy feebly point toward without remotely touching the pure nothingness and everythingness of one’s being. In that reality, that whole, one falls silent. 🙂
